Chapter 10

THE ADVERTISING man returned to the office the next morning and I went over the copy he had written. It was sexy and to the point. Photo Lovelies was a new organization to assist the beginning artist in his quest for proper nude models. They came in all poses and all sizes. The artist could make his pick and be sure that he would be pleased with what was sent to him.

"We'll bear down on the artistic angle," the advertising man said. "It's safe and with a five-dollar order we can throw in some junk to help them draw. If a kid orders one of the sets nobody can blame us. We only go by what's on the order blank and that shows the age."

"Sounds legal."

"Oh, it’s legal enough. What you'll be selling won't be any worse than some of the magazines being sold. Have you seen the nudist line? There's a ruling they can use the mails and some of them don't even shade anything out."

"Is that a fact?"

"As true as I'm sitting here. Pick up a few copies."

I had lunch with Sandy—she had come to the city with me that morning—and I managed to get a couple of issues slanted at the nudist cult. The advertising man had been right; there wasn't anything left out, not a thing. The women were as they were in real life and so were the men. Some of the pictures showed them while engaged in sports and others were just stills.

She stirred her iced coffee.

"I've thought about that modeling job," she said. "I've thought about it a lot. What would be so wrong if I did do it?"

"Nothing."

"Would my picture be in magazines?"

I had to level with her. She was no fool and she wouldn't go into something blind.

"No, I replied."We're going to make up sets of various girls and sell them through the mail. It'll just be another part of our business under another name. We'll cater to artists who can't afford to hire models. For two bucks we'll give them the tools to work with."

"And I'd be naked?"

"Not in all of the shots. Some would be with you in bra and panties and maybe one with your dress on, sort of down off the shoulder. These guys are looking for beauty and you have to give it to them."

The little restaurant was busy but we had a quiet place and we could talk. During the ride down on the train she hadn't mentioned the modeling thing and I hadn't either. You don't force a girl like Sandy. You lead her gently, letting her think that she's making up her own mind about what she wants to do.

"I can't stay in Middletown," she was saying. "Not after last night."

"Why?" I prodded her gently.

"Because Alice is my sister and the same thing will happen again and again." She held up her hand. "It wasn't your fault, Art. And it wasn't the fault of the booze. I was to blame. When I picked you up at the railroad station I wanted it to happen and it did.
